PEOPLE AFFECTED IN THE

UNITED STATES

Dystonia is the third most common movement disorder in the United States behind essential tremor and Parkinson’s disease. Dystonia is a neurological disorder that causes excessive, involuntary muscle contractions. These muscle contractions result in abnormal mobility and body postures, making it difficult for individuals to control their movements. Dystonic movements are typically patterned and repetitive.

Dystonia results from abnormal functioning of the basal ganglia, a deep part of the brain which helps control coordination of movement. Dystonia can affect any region of the body including the eyelids, face, jaw, neck, vocal cords, torso, limbs, hands, and feet. Depending on the region of the body affected, dystonia may look quite different from person to person. Symptoms can include tremors, uncontrollable blinking, speech difficulties, cramping and contractions, or a gait abnormalities.

Our doctors have unique education and training in the understanding and rehabilitation of Dystonia. Clinically,  a multi-modal approach to therapy allows for the most successful reduction in symptoms and improvement in quality of life in patients with dystonia.
