WHAT IS
FUNCTIONAL
NEUROLOGY?
A functional neurologist, also known as a chiropractic neurologist, is a highly trained and qualified nervous system specialist. Functional neurologists are Doctors of Chiropractic with a post-doctoral diplomate from the American Board of Chiropractic Neurology. In addition, functional neurologists have advanced training in clinical neuroscience, studying the brain's functionality extensively.
Having advanced training in clinical neuroscience, functional neurologists use many tools to evaluate the functionality of the nervous system and brain. This evaluation always begins with an extensive health history and a thorough physical examination. Then, a detailed neurological exam is performed, along with neurodiagnostic tests.
Diagnostic technologies are used to get a closer look at how your visual system, vestibular system, balance, and coordination are working. All this information provides a window into the functionality of your brain and nervous system to locate underlying areas of dysfunction in both your brain and body. At Better Brain & Body, along with the thorough physical exam, we provide the following neurodiagnostic tests to pinpoint the root cause of dysfunction in our patient’s brain:
-
Videonystagomgraphy (VNG) - Measures eye movements down to the millisecond that are related to different areas of the brain, brainstem, and cerebellum.
-
Interactive Metronome (IM) Assessment - Measures rhythm and timing.
-
Gait Analysis
-
Primitive Reflex Testing
-
Computerized Dynamic Posturography (CDP) - Measures balance down to 100th of an inch.
-
Quantitative Electroencephalography - (qEEG) Measures delta, theta, alpha, and beta waves in the brain's frontal, temporal, parietal, and occipital lobes.
-
Sensorimotor Evaluation
-
Hand-Eye Coordination Test
A functional neurologist’s main goal is to optimize brain function. We use a multi-modal approach to rehabilitation that consists of a wide variety of neurologically stimulating and benefiting therapies. You and your doctor will work to create an individualized treatment plan that is optimum for your specific needs. Some of the common therapies include:
-
Neurofeedback
-
Eye Movement Therapy
-
Exercise with Oxygen Therapy (EWOT)
-
Vestibular RehabExercises
-
Interactive Metronome (IM)
-
Peripheral Somatosensory Stimulation
-
Primitive Reflex Remediation
-
HemiStim
-
Rotational Therapies
-
Cold Laser Therapy
-
Oscillation
-
Light & Color Therapies
-
AromaTherapy Techniques
